We all remember Glenrowan and the plan to take up the track. The railway played a vital part in the police operation. It helped them get people and horses from one place to the next. To find out what was going on all the KellyGang and their friends had to do was just monitor the railways.
The railways employed a large number of people. There were train drivers, guards, station masters, porters, signal staff, gate keepers at the level crossings, line repairers etc
There were many camps along railway lines when they were being built that have now ceased to exist. See for instance the Big Hill Camp at Damiallie's on the line to Beechworth
