All most as soon as the squatters came to North Eastern Victoria there as a need to have a system to develop the letters from home. In a short time there were regular deliveries of news and mail from Sydney and Melbourne. The postmasters in the towns also managed the telegraph.

Mail routes

Mail was carried through the countryside on regular routes. Many of them in the mid 1870s were the coaching routes run by Crawford. The mail contracts were important to provide the coaching companies with a regular income. Of course most of the mail was delivered by train were the lines existed
