Local Businesses
By the 1870's towns like Euroa, Benalla, Wangaratta and Beechworth had a wide range of local businesses to support their local community and the farming, grazing and mining that took place in the area. These towns still support local shops but in the 1870s they had a much wider range of businesses such as hotels, newspapers, banks, coaching, and bakers, saddliers, butchers, undertakers, brewers, flour millers, brick makers, hawkers, sawmillers, wine makers, carters, and the like. Travel costs were high so things were made near where they were used. On this site most of the pages for towns make reference to the local business people.

There were very few professional services and they were largely confined to doctors and lawyers.

Another major employer were the public utilities such as the post office, railways and of course the police.
