...a place in the KellyGang story
The Melbourne Club was founded by squatters in 1839. It moved to it present location in 1858.
The Melbourne was known as the leading men's club in Victoria. Many of its members have had significant positions in Government and commerce. Police Commissioner Standish was a member and many of his officers were concerned that things were arranged in the club between Standish and a small group of senior police who were also members.
When Robert McBean of Kilfera was stuck up by Harry Power he met Standish in the Melbourne Club and arranged for the police to put a reward of £500 for Power's capture
Sup Hare was concerned that he was excluded from Standish's world because he was not a member of the Melbourne Club
Standish met the Chief Secretary Mr Ramsay at about 5 pm on 27/6/1880 and informed him about Sherritt's death and the request that O'Connor and the trackers return (RC 77)
