During the gold rush Williamstown was the port from which the miners began their journey to the gold fields. A number of hulks were used as temporary gaols

Williamstown was a busy port for Melbourne.

Ned Kelly spent part of his time in the early 1870's in Pentridge and down at the goal quarry and public works depot at Point Gelibrand.
The prisoners were accomodated on the hulks of old sailing ships. This was seen as a worst punishment than life in the Prison.
