What was the sawmill like
Rule and I had a sawmill at Burkes water hole on Burke's Hole farm near the Kelly home. We purchased the sawmill from a Wangaratta butcher who got into financial problems.
Time when Ned Kelly worked for Saunders

In 1874 Ned Kelly was released from goal and he went to work as a faller for Rule I and others sawmillers. Later Ned Kelly was the overseer at our Burkes water hole sawmill.

In September 1876 with the end of Beechworth railway branch line, the sawmills income almost ceased and Saunder and Rule wanted to relocate the sawmill to Gippsland were they had a contract supply timber for the railways.

Please enjoy the story of the KellyGang, but also remember that at least 10 people died and many more had their lives changed in ways that may still be painful to some people.
