Jerilderie Robbery 11/2/1879
Teachers/Clergy

The KellyGang arrived at my branch of the Bank of New South Wales Jerilderie on the afternoon of Monday 11/2/1879. I understand from my accountant Mr Living at first thought that I had returned to the bank when the first of them entered the bank but it was Joe Byrne. I had recently returned home from a 40 mile ride to see a client.

After Mr Living and Mr Mackie were taken from the bank to the Royal hotel by the KellyGang Ned Kelly and Joe Byrne returned to the bank with Mr Living looking for me. Ned Kelly was very angry at not finding me. During this time I was in my dressing room and Mr Living actually found me while I was taking a bath. He told me that we were stuck up by KellyGang and that they had stuck up the police also. Joe Byrne came and left Dan Kelly with me until I was dressed. I was then taken over to the Royal hotel. When Ned Kelly realised that he needed my key and Mr Living's to open the safe I was brought back to the bank. By then they had taken £691 from the tellers cash. They then removed £1450 from the safe.

Ned Kelly then started taking down deposit boxes and he said that he wanted to burn the contents. They were important loan and mortgage documents but the KellyGang seemed intent upon things but before they did anything they returned me back to the Royal hotel. I understand that Ned Kelly came back and burnt many important documents.

Soon after the KellyGang left town Living and I got on on our horses and left town to give the alarm. The KellyGang was not impressed and they took it out on Wunnamurra Station which was managed by Mr Mackie's brother .

Mr Living and I gave an interview to the press see what we had to say. (Argus12/2/79)

Please enjoy the story of the KellyGang, but also remember that at least 10 people died and many more had their lives changed in ways that may still be painful to some people.
