Special train leaves Melbourne to go to Beechworth - follow up on death of Aaron Sherritt
I was a guard on the special train from Melbourne to Glenrowan.
See my statement to the press. It contains some technical information about
the movement of the trains. (Argus1/7/80) See McPhee's account
After the train left Essendon the train raveled at a great speed, and before the passengers were aware of any accident having occurred, we had smashed through a gate about a mile beyond Craigieburn. All we noticed was a crack like a bullet striking the carriage. The brake of the engine had, however, been torn away, the footbridge of the guard's van destroyed. I was looking out of the van at the time, and had a very narrow escape. ( Argus29/6/80)
Train arrives at Benalla
I then continued with the train to Benalla where we picked up some additional
police. We were then proceeded by a pilot engine on our way towards Beechworth.
The pilot engine stopped near Glenrowan at about 2.35am (Argus29/6/80)
Arrive at Glenrowan
I arrived at Glenrowan by train at about 2.30
am on the morning of the siege with Sup Hare. See my statement in (Argus1/7/80)
Beginning of the siege
I watched the start of the siege from the railway platform (RC1609)
After this we moved trains backwards and forward all day
