The problem of Const Barry's report to Det Ward took up much of the evidence
18/5/1881 SConst Kelly commenced his evidence - some brief highlights
SConst Kelly was the leader of the police at the Glenrowan siege after Sup Hare was injured.
He went off to North eastern Victoria soon after the murders at Stringy Bark Creek. Soon after SConst Kelly and a search party went out through Greta to Boggy Creek. There they met Galloping Jack and a number of the other players in this story. When they returned to Benalla they met Wild Wright and some more sympathizers.
SConst Kelly got to the Sebastopol cavalcade and met Aaron Sherritt. He then went on to describe what he did after as he participated in the hunt for the KellyGang.
When the news of Aaron Sherritt's death came through, SConst Kelly was in Benalla. He assisted Sup Hare by getting the special train ready to go up to Beechworth. He gave lots of details of who did what and how they got to Glenrowan.
The Royal Commission took SConst Kelly through the events of the beginning of the siege at Jones's Inn and how Sup Hare and the other police got from the railway platform to the front of the Inn. As an example Kelly started to described his position in relation to Sup Hare at the time the first shot was fired in the following terms, 'More in front of the house. I was above the corner, west of the railway-west-in a line with the front of the house, because they fell back to the west.'
The KellyGang fired the
first volley.
Sup Hare was shot
"Kelly, surround the house, for God's sake, do not let them escape,"
"O'Connor"
"Come on, O'Connor, the beggars have shot me-bring your boys with you; surround
the house."
Women were crying in the Inn.
Which way did Hare go, did he return, did he order the police to stop firing?
Kelly then had a problem with the police ammunition. Mr Rawlins came to help
Mrs Stainstreet was within range of the people at the Inn.
She did not want to go to McDonald's. Where was OConnor in relation to the
fence. Where were the other police spread around.
