GOBUR

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT

Mining continues very quiet. Messes O'Callaghan and Rennie have commenced operations in their claim on the deep lead, so profitably worked by former companies in the good old days of prosperity, and from what I can learn, reasonably hope to be remunerated for their exemplary energy. They anticipate reaching the bottom at about 76 feet. Some are of the opinion the water will be too much for them, but consolation of this kind is always to be obtained here without money and without price, and it is to be hoped for the good of our little community, they will proceed, undaunted by those who go about soliloquising, mining's no good, farming's no good, nothing's any good. I see steam is once again rising from the Revival company's funnel, and on enquiring, I learn that Palmer and Doyle are re-puddling and sluicing the old stuff about the surface, which has once undergone that process. They can earn small wages, but it will only last a week or two.

I hear there is to be another, election here shortly, two seats in our Board of Advice becoming vacant by effluxion of time. Should there be such a rush of candidates as on the last election, we may expect a little excitement at an early date. Most of our farmers are well ahead with their ploughing, and wheat is being more freely sown, on account of the low price of oats this season. Should we be favored with fine weather for a few days, and old Sol be permitted to shine upon our young crops, any one of a rural turn of mind 'would be amply repaid for their exertions in paying us a visit.
