The man who fired at Constable Monks, at Avoca, is suspected of being Edward Evans, a discharged prisoner. Evans was convicted at the Sandhurst Circuit Court in April, 1861, of burglary, robbery, and shooting. Sentence of death was recorded, and the Executive reduced the sentence to 21 years, the first three in irons. Evans from time to time gave valuable information to the authorities as to crimes committed, or about to be committed, and for these services he obtained a remission of two years in 1872, and one year in 1877. He was discharged in May 1877. The prison regulations would have admitted of his liberation after serving 16 years.
