The telegram from Adelaide concerning Ned Kelly, which appeared in yesterdays publication, had its origin, it seems in a circumstance which transpired at Adelaide on the last homeward trip of the Chimborazo While the steamer was at anchor there, a report had got into circulation that Ned Kelly was amongst the passengers. The members of the local detective force were on the alert to secure so valuable a prize, and after carefully watching their man and making sure of him, he was tapped on the shoulder, and told that he was wanted. His language as he turned round to face the party who accosted him was couched in vigorous but undeniable French, and the Ned Kelly delusion was at once dispelled. The surprise of the detective and his intended captive, it is said, was mutual and undisguised. This was the man who disappeared from the Chimborazo during the night she anchored in the Suez Canal. It is said that he was an escapee from New Caledonia, and had run away with another man's wife, and then in turn gave her the slip before reaching Port Said, taking her money with him, as she alleges. He suspected that he was going to be handed over to the French Consul on arrival there, and this it is that prompted his sudden exit. A description of him was left with the French Consul at Port Said.
