THE CASE OF MR E MONK

[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH]
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDETENT)

MANSFIELD, FRIDAY

Mr Edward Monk and his family arrived at Mansfield last night, and his furniture will be forwarded to day Mr Monk speaks warmly on the subject of a rumour which has been circulated to the effect that the reported sticking up was an invention, and that he shot at his horse and his saddle himself. These statements are regarded as slanders here. The position of the shot marks is satisfactorily explained by persons who have examined the saddle and horse. Mr Monk purchased the horse only a few days ago for £20, and within the last four months he has laid out £200 in im provements on his property, besides this, Mr Monk has lived at Wombat many years, and was doing a fair business. He is much respected by all around, and well known as a very straightforward man in all his dealings. The Kelly sympathisers would rejoice to see Monk suspected of deceit, and thereby lose all chance of compensation. His mill will be idle after to-morrow, as his men are leaving, and the loss will be serious to him. A meet ing of the residents of the shire will be held to morrow to express an opinion on the case.
