THE MANSFIELD TRAGEDY

Rumours of an exciting character were frequently circulated throughout the city on Monday evening to the effect that the Kelly gang of bushrangers were surrounded by the police, and that their capture might be hourly expected. The rumour probably arose from the fact that the authorities have been very reticent on the subject, and are supposed to be in possession of information regarding the whereabouts of the outlaws, which it has been deemed expedient, for various reasons, not to make public. Whatever it may be, there is nothing more in it than points to the possibility of the gang being found in the neighborhood of of Chiltern. The prevailing opinion is that they are on this side of the Murray, at Rat's Castle, a most inaccessible place in the ranges between the Indigo Creek and Yackandandah. It appears that a party of bushmen have seen four mounted men answering their description in that locality, and on Sunday night a special train with twelve troopers left Benalla for the district named. This certainly leads to the belief that there is something in the report, so that there is now every expectation of the miscreants soon being apprehended,
